Why You Should Ditch Metal Fillings For a Healthier Smile
March 19, 2026

Traditional amalgam was once the only viable solution for treating cavities and dental damage; more malleable, lifelike options are now available in dental offices throughout the country. But if you already have metal fillings, why should you swap them out just because something newer is available? Read on to learn the truth about what is in your mouth and why you should have it removed sooner rather than later.
What is the Problem with Metal Fillings?
According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), dental amalgam is generally safe in small amounts, but it does release small amounts of mercury vapor. The more fillings a person has, the higher the increase in mercury levels in their blood and/or urine.
However, in 2016, researchers at the University of Georgia discovered that dental amalgam can prolong the presence of mercury in the body. In fact, if eight or more fillings exist, the chances of developing an adverse effect significantly increase. When found at higher levels in the body, it can cause damage to the heart, kidneys, lungs, brain, and immune system.
Although many experts still believe the mercury levels remain low enough to be safe, another solution is considered safer and more aesthetically pleasing.
What Are the Benefits of Choosing Tooth-Colored Fillings?
Dentists who offer tooth-colored fillings often do so for many reasons:
- They are capable of color-matching, so they can blend in with a patient’s existing tooth enamel.
- They allow patients to keep more of their natural teeth because less of the structure needs to be removed.
- Composite resin does not expand when exposed to temperatures, so the risk of the tooth experiencing further damage (as a result of the filling) remains low.
- Composite resin is biocompatible, so it is considered a healthier option for a person’s overall health and well-being.
While it is true that amalgam fillings can last a long time, they often pose a potential health hazard. Instead, tooth-colored fillings are highly durable and can remain in place for more than 10 years.
Of course, much of this depends on how well you take care of your new restoration(s). If you wear proper mouth protection while playing sports or grinding your teeth, practice good oral hygiene, keep your six-month dental checkups and cleanings, and commit to eating a nutrient-rich diet, you should have no problem keeping your filling in place.
Say goodbye to unhealthy metal. By making the switch, you’ll feel more comfortable and confident in the health and longevity of your new smile.
