Strange Happenings: 3 Unusual Dental Emergencies

Brushing and flossing your teeth are essential to preventing common dental concerns, such as tooth decay, gum disease, and injuries. However, even if you’re committed to your twice-daily oral hygiene routine, there’s no guarantee that you’ll never have a dental emergency.

There’s no telling when or how you might encounter an unexpected issue that requires immediate attention. With that in mind, continue reading to learn about 3 of the strangest dental disasters to avoid these potential emergencies!

Emergency #1: Bridge Buildup

Cleaning your mouth consistently can help avoid other oral issues, too, such as forming a calculus bridge. This can happen if you neglect routine dental maintenance, which allows plaque and tartar to harden into a thick layer on your enamel.

Caring for your teeth and gums consistently can help you avoid unexpected concerns, like one patient who aggressively brushed his calculus bridge to try to remove it. They were only partially successful because, although they did indeed clear some of the buildup, their natural teeth began to fall out, too. They had been so damaged and decayed that the solidified residue was the only thing holding them in place.

Emergency #2: Sticky Situation

Have you ever had a severely decayed or damaged tooth that required a root canal? If so, your dentist likely provided a customized dental crown to protect it from additional harm while restoring its functionality after your procedure.

If you notice chips, cracks, or other damage to your restoration, you should seek professional assistance rather than try to fix it on your own at home. Some people have tried to repair dental work, like dentures or crowns, with super glue, which actually isn’t intended for oral use. Not only can it be toxic if ingested, but you could end up coating your mouth and throat with the adhesive, like other patients have done.

Emergency #3: Instance of Amnesia

Many people experience anxiety when it comes to dental visits, especially if they have a more complex procedure to undergo, like a root canal. This common procedure typically fixes more concerns than it causes, but for one unfortunate person, that wasn’t the case.

In 2005, a man named William visited his dentist for a routine root canal, and has been able to retain memories for longer than 90 minutes since then. Although he’s sought help from various psychiatrists, neurologists, and other experts, no one seems to be able to explain why this happened or how to resolve it.

Fortunately, many dentists offer same-day emergency visits and various options for dental sedation so that you don’t have to wait long for relief if you’re experiencing an urgent issue!
